>> back on "eyewitness news", this is a look at the devestation on the island of haiti almost a week after it was hit by hurricane matthew. crews are ferry food, and several nations sending food, water, seltzer. matthew left at least 350,000 people in need of assistance, that includes medical attention. >> well the aftermath of hurricane matthew continues to be a threat to part of the southeast. >> more than foot of rain has led to severe flooding in portions of the carolinas, which requires more than a thousand water rescues. mark straws man has the latest.
12:17 pm
>> hold on. hey. we're coming for you. >> in flooded fayettsville, teams scramble to help an infant mother and daughter. the family car got stuck in flashflood water. also, okay, this family of three, marooned on top of their suv. they had tried to drive through raging current, and needed to be rescued by a team of new york firefighters. over the weekend, more than 1,000 people were rescued here. the greatest threat at this point in time remains inland flooding that will continue through eastern and central north carolina. >> matthew dumb up up to 15 inches of rain in part of north carolina. >> you can see water and water related problems all over. over the weekends rain was falling at a rate of 2 inches an hour all that rain also overflowed the state's rivers
12:18 pm
several feet above normal level, bracing dams, and threatening towns with record flooding. >> we'll try to get some clothe out there. >> families using their own boats to collect what they can from homes with a water rising. >> the problem is we had water last week, it come in, and before this come. i no where for it to go. >> because of roads like this the resident both get back in their homes for some time. >> fayetteville declared water shortage emergency. mark vast man, cbs news, fayetteville, north carolina. >> that's the thing a loft us don't think of. they're dealing with maybe well water, and all of the stuff that ends up after these types of storms. >> absolutely, so, still some left over problems to contend with, so often with flooding it, almost always happens with delayed reaction, delayed response comes along with it, it will take some time to recover completely, at least the weather is cooperating, so
12:19 pm
that helps, you know? they won't be dealt any additional blows when it comes to the weather pattern, certainly here at home, yes, we ended up with relatively soggy weekend generally speaking, but now, we are in the clear, and that looks lick it will be the story for us for many, many days yet to come here. so we take you out there, show you the view first on storm scan3, nice wide zoom. you can actually still see the left over moisture at this point from what has been matthew. again it is no longer, an organized storm system, but moisture still plaguing atlantic canada, continues to pull away. so yes, back from the sunshine now, folks, it will stay that way for multiple days, but because of the clear skies, remember, this time of year specially, without the blanket of cloud cover overhead, you see the temperatures drop off a lot more readily through the overnight and east of the mississippi basically how the story will go here won't and issue for us. let's talk about that first frost. we're basically right on time, the time of year we start to see the first frost. nothing atypical just that
12:20 pm
first one always feels like it is coming a lot earlier than would you like it to, regardless mid to late october is generally when you find the first frost across at least the delaware valley. but we're right on pace to see that at this point as you mention, northwest suburbs, interior, southern new jersey, you're going to be dealing with the frost advisory one more time. 2:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m., temperatures will bottom out mid 30's, so good idea maybe if you have got your fall mums sitting on the front porch, just throw a clot over those, and bring them inside for the night, also make sure your pets are safe. make sure they're in nice warm place through the overnight. >> turning the focus to what's going on in the tropicsment matthew again no long area concern for the eastern seaboard, but we do still have tropical storm nicole sitting and brewing out the middle portion of the atlantic here. no threat to the u.s. coastline, but it is worth a mention, because it is going to eventually regain its hurricane strength, that's another one that's gone back and forth with categorization,
12:21 pm
eventually perhaps either brush or actually directly hit the bermuda here. so, taking a look at where this is headed, very slow right now, only going to the north at 6 miles per hour there is will take little curve past kind of like matthew did, but it does look like it could pass right over very close to bermuda in the days ahead potentially as category one if not category two hurricane. that will will be something that's we need to keep close monitor on. meantime outside we go to our shore line, and outside beach patrol headquarters, surf looks little chop is. high tide happens about an hour and a half ago or so. but, these waves still look awfully high to me. i think partly because you have got a lot of winds out there. we showed you earlier in the show, wind are right now peaking as high as into the 20's with gusts little bit higher than that. you will notice the breeze for sure. these are actual air temperatures flirting with 60 in most spots at the moment, just shy of 50 in mount pocono, but won't add too much more to this. sixty-four at best for daytime high. breezy cool columbus day forecast, meanwhile the next
12:22 pm
few days we're rebounding nicely being back to the low 70s, because it is smidge above average, but even though we have cool front passage on thursday, i don't think it comes through with any weather err. looks like mainly few clouds, will do its part to knock the temperatures back again. >> looking nice, thank you, katie. >> not bad at all. >> as the weather cools down, you may find yourself reaching for those boot socks. well, how about red and white striped socks this year? >> it is festival of families for the show your stripes campaign, supporting the philadelphia ronald mcdonald house, make a donation, get yourself a pair of socks, scarf, tie. and number of locations including this roving striped car, provides home away from home for families with children fighting serious illness. >> if you're not interested in purchasing a striped item, but interested in supporting our family in honor of our birthday go to our website and
